Winter Farm

Winter Farm was painted while in Vancouver's Stanley Park painter's Circle with my daughter. I was demonstrating the use of just two colours to paint a full-colour scene. Several of the artists agreed with me that the blue/reddish brown combination is the most effective. Having tried yellow/purple, and red/green, I will usually choose the blue/reddish brown. I also find the square format a bit disconcerting ! One becomes so accustomed to working with rectangles (even an oval is just a rectangle without the corners) that such a change really makes itself felt. There is definitely a feeling that something is missing--and it turns out that it is the ends of the painting. You would think that having that much less area to affect the composition would simplify things, but not for me ! Obviously, I need to work with this size quite a lot, to overcome this inhibition. There is always something to challenge me, in order to improve.....
